Vera Newton Obituary

Faith is a gift of God. It is not a material that can be seen, heard, smelled, tasted, or touched; but is as real as anything that can be perceived with these senses.

On February 5th,1938, beautiful twin girls were born to Moree Foley, Sr. and Mary Perkins Foley. They named them Mera Lee (aka Big Girl) and Vera Lee Foley (aka Little Girl). This narrative will focus on Vera L.'s life journey.

Vera attended Hallettsville Public School. She accepted, was baptized and dedicated her life to Jesus Christ at an early age. Vera was a faithful member at Good Hope Missionary Baptist Church until her health began to fail.

Vera married Clyde E. McAfee, Sr. and was blessed with one son, Clyde E. McAfee, Jr., and one daughter, Janice M. McAfee.

Later in life, she married Robert "Elroy" Newton and was blessed with one daughter, Sammy R. Newton, and five bonus children, one daughter, and four sons: Valinda McAfee, Thomas E. Newton, Reverend Michael E. Newton, Ronald E. Newton and Ray A. Newton.

Vera loved to cook, clean and take care of others. She was disciplined, but also had a remarkable sense of humor. Vera has a unique way of telling you the truth in a humorous way that made you laugh.

Vera provided domestic care for Dr. Norman Rubin's family, where she raised their three sons. For over 17 years, Vera worked as a CNA at Stevens Nursing & Rehab Center of Hallettsville, providing excellent care for the elderly and disabled. Vera loved cooking for anyone and everyone. She especially loved frying chicken in her cast iron skillet.

On Thursday, April 29th, 2021, surrounded by family and friends at the Stevens Nursing & rehab Center of Hallettsville, Texas , Vera was called to her "Eternal Rest" to be with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Vera was preceded in death by her husband, "Elroy" Newton, and son Rev. Michael E. Newton; parents, Moree Foley, Sr. and Mary P. Foley; sisters, Mera Lee Foley (twin sister), Juanita Foley Mitchell, and Lillie M. Carroll; grandmothers, Daisy Foley and Viola Perkins; and grandfathers, rev. J.P. Foley and Henry Perkins.

She leaves to cherish her memories: her loving, devoted children: Clyde E. McAfee, Jr. (Glenda), Janice M. Joubert-Calahan (Donnie), Sammy R. Newton (Harold), Valinda McAfee, Thomas Newton (Heidi), Ronald Newton (Sikina), Ray Newton (Brenda);one brother, Moree Foley, Jr.(Joyce), one sister, Ada M. Tillman (Douglas, Sr.), 23 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren, and a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends that will truly miss her beautiful smile and willingness to help whoever needed her.
