Thurman Herring, Jr., affectionately known by many as “T,” was born on June 17, 1951, in Hallettsville, Texas, to the late Thurman Herring, Sr. and Maxine Carroll. He was one of fourteen children and was deeply rooted in family, faith, and service throughout his life.
At an early age, Thurman professed his faith in Christ and united with Lone Star Baptist Church, where he remained a faithful and devoted member. He served diligently as Head Deacon, Sunday School teacher, and Treasurer, giving of himself wholeheartedly until the time of his passing.
Thurman was a 1969 graduate of Hallettsville High School and later attended Texas Lutheran College in Seguin, Texas. He returned home to Hallettsville, where he built a long and successful career in the oil and gas industry. Over nearly 50 years, he was employed by Shell Oil, Kopano, and Kinder Morgan.
A lover of the outdoors, Thurman found joy, peace, and fulfillment in life’s simple pleasures—whether casting a fishing line, stepping up to the softball plate, tending the church grounds, or watching over a barbecue pit. He had a servant’s heart, always eager to help others, with acts of kindness rooted in humility and genuine love. He especially cherished his annual vacation and fishing trips with his brothers and delighted in spending time with family and friends, often teasing and playfully harassing any and all Dallas “Cowboy” fans.
Thurman often shared the words, “Get ready, stay ready, and be ready,” and he made it clear that when God called him home, he would be ready. On Saturday, December 6, 2025, he peacefully transitioned into eternal rest.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Carl Herring; and one daughter, Alicia Haynes.
Left to cherish his memory are his beloved wife of 52 years, Sharon Tones Herring; his son, Thurman Herring III (Kristina); daughters, Turchana Ferguson (Lewis), Ashley Herring, and Kimberley Herring; brothers, L.G. Herring (Annie), Dennis Herring Sr. (Alberta), Paul Herring (Eny), Clifford Herring Sr. (Neira), Terrel Herring Sr. (Maryanne), Vernon Herring Sr. (Carla), and Donald Herring Sr. (Cassundra); sisters, Effie Kelly, Brenda Newton (Ray), Cheryl Jackson (KC), Darlene Mayberry (Michael), and Arletta Chapman. He also leaves behind six grandchildren, two bonus grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, two bonus great-grandchildren, a host of relatives and friends, and his dearest companion, his adored Chihuahua, “Chi-Chi.”.
