Otis “Coach Henry’s” Life Journey

Coach (noun); [kohch]

A believer who brings the best out of you through inspiration and a whole lot of perspiration.

On September 14, 2021, Otis L. Henry was welcomed to his heavenly home by his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Otis was born in Weimar, Texas on November 15, 1956, to Allen Ray Steward and Willie Mae Henry. At an early age he accepted Christ at Greater Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. T.R. Simmons, later in life under the leadership of Pastor J.W. Nelson.

Otis attended Karl Downs Colored School then graduating from Weimar High School in 1975. Anyone who met him never forgot his passion for sports. During his high school and college career, he received numerous honors and awards in football, basketball, baseball and track & field. Otis’ outstanding athletic and academic abilities lead to him earning football scholarships to Blinn College in Brenham, Texas and Stephen F. Austin University in Nacogdoches. After receiving his B.S. in Education, Otis began his career in coaching and teaching at Weimar High School, then on to Galveston Ball High and Beaumont Central High School. He loved educating his students and encouraging them in the classroom as well as on the court and field.

Otis is preceded in death by his parents and grandparents, sisters Carolyn Hasty, Lillie Paige, and brother Edward Steward Sr. He leaves to cherish his memories to his two daughters, Brandi (Artrell) Perry of Houston; Brittany Henry of Katy; one son, Otis Henry Jr. of San Marcos; three grandsons, Joshua, Artrell Jr, and Kamdyn.
