Linda Joyce Martin, a beloved, aunt, and friend passed away on January 28, 2025. She was born on July 11, 1951, in Houston, Texas, to Lawrence Williams and Amelia James.
A former student of Evan E. Worthing High School (Class of 1969), Linda's intelligence and determination were evident from an early age. She was a remarkably talented woman who excelled in every endeavor she pursued. Without formal training or a degree, she built a successful career with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs in both Houston and Austin, Texas. She also dedicated her time and skills to Head Start of Texas, where she transformed her role from teaching to and administrative position.
In early 1980's, Linda met and married Willie Martin, relocating to Smithville, Texas, where she became a cherished member of the community. A woman of deep faith, she was an active member of Mt. Pilgrim Baptist Church, lending her beautiful voice to the choir and sharing her musical talents as a renowned organist and pianist. A little over a decade after Willie's passing, Linda returned to her hometown of Houston, reconnecting with the community where she was born and raised. She became a devoted member of South Union Baptist Church, where she once again found joy by singing in the choir. Although she never had children of her own, Linda's nurturing spirit made her a second mother to many. She was a source of wisdom, warmth, and unwavering love to all who knew her.
Linda was preceded in death by her parents, Lawrence and Amelia B. Williams; her husband, Willie Martin; her sisters, Lawrence Jean Mailey and Lizzie M. Williams; and her brother, George J. Williams. She leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories with her nieces, Amelia A. Williams and Chandra Y. Mailey; her nephew, George J. Perkins; as well as a host of great-nieces, great-nephews, friends and loved ones. Linda's life was a testament to faith, resilience, and kindness. She will be deeply missed but forever remembered in the hearts of those who were fortunate to know her.
