Leonard James Perkins, Sr., 69, of Hallettsville, Texas, was born on September 13, 1954, to the late Rev. Will Perkins and the late Mrs. Frankie Foley Perkins.
As a preacher’s kid, he grew up in Good Hope, Texas, with his five siblings Willie Bea, Dorothy, Leon, Wilbert, and Evelyn. Together, they sang on the local radio, creating memories to last a lifetime.
Leonard was known as “Booney” and “Perk.” He loved horses and rodeo life, motorcycles, truck driving, good music, and a good time. He was often the life of the party.
He married Sheila Fowler Perkins on March 17, 1975. They had three children together, and after they divorced, they remained special friends for life.
Perk is preceded in death by his parents; brother and sister, Wilbert and Dorothy; parents-in-law, Leon and Claytonia Ervin; brothers-in-law Henry Arnold,Sr., Leonard King, Kirk Ervin; and Herbert Shelton; nephew, Kelvin Perkins and, his beloved horses; Sugar Boy and Yella and forever best friend and dog, Old Blue
He will be deeply missed and leaves to mourn Sheila Perkins; his sisters Willie Bea King, of Altair, Texas, and Evelyn Shelton, of Hallettsville, Texas; his brother, Leon Perkins, of Luling, Texas; and, his in-laws Mildred Johnson, Rev. James Fowler, Carl and Kristy Ervin, Rosia Kam, Rev. Terrell and Michelle Ervin, Pastors Alton and Peggy Pohl, and Tracye Ervin.
He is also survived by his children Leonard Perkins, Jr., and his wife, Jeri, of Hallettsville, Texas; Bradley Perkins, of Hallettsville, Texas; and, Monica Burchell, and her husband, Joshua, of Victoria, Texas.
Booney also leaves behind his grandchildren Aubrena Barnes, Kragan Johnson, Kyle Perkins, Brentyn Perkins; and, Titus, Zipporah, Asher, and Keziah Burchell. His great-grandchildren are Prayden, Laithan, Oakleigh, Kylee, Kace, Kayzlie, and Alayiah. He will be missed by a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, and longtime family friends, but his cowboy spirit will ride on in all of us.
Pastor Peggy Pohl will officiate.
Rev. James H. Fowler, Jr., his brother-in-law will give the eulogy.
A luncheon will be held after service at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church fellowship hall in Hallettsville, 100 N. Promenade Street.
One Last Trail Ride to “Perk’s Arena” will follow at 4 pm.
