Laura Jean Evans was born on September 11, 1944, to Wilie and Marjorie Evans. She departed this life on Thursday, July 20, 2023.
Laura joined St. Paul A.M.E. Church at an early age. She participated in the YPD and church choir. She attended Randolph High School in La Grange, Texas, where she was an outstanding basketball player for Flatonia and Randolph Schools
Laura married the love of her life, Charles Grant and was the proud parent of Damon Grant and Yolanda Grant. She was a caretaker for Charles in his final years. We all learned what love looked like through watching her care for her husband. They were the perfect
Laura was loved by all and never met a stranger. She was an extraordinary cook and worked at Red's and Grumpy's. She also worked as a custodian at Flatonia ISD and for a home health care service. She had the most important job as a stay-at-home mom and took great pride in the upbringing of her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and all of her god kids in the community.
Laura's biggest jobs never came with a paycheck, and she was perfectly fine with that. She was our Counselor, our motivational speaker, she was the one we leaned on when we felt our feet might fail us. She never shied away from addressing things that weren't "right" and she made a point to have her voice heard. In that way, she taught us what grace, strength and humility should look like. She was the walking embodiment of all things good, but she was humble enough to never tell everyone all of the things she did for her friends, family and community.
Laura was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, Willie Ray Evans, Fred Evans and Bishop Evans, and two sisters, Carol LaFond and Barbara Jackson. She is survived by her daughter, Yolanda Grant: her son, Damon Grant; one brother, Drs. Ray Evans (Anja), two brothers-in-law, Andrew Grant and Lester Grant (Evelyn), one sister-in-law, Laverne Evans, six grandchildren, four great grandchildren, additional family members and countless friends.
We all take comfort knowing that she is reunited with those that went before her and that there is no suffering in God's kingdom. She will be missed, but she will never be forgotten.
