Jeremias Castro Alvarado, 96, passed away peacefully on March 30, 2026, in Austin, Texas. He was born on February 16, 1930, in Wharton County, Texas, to Higinio Alvarado and Patricia Castro Alvarado. He attended Pine Springs School near Flatonia on FM 609 and, in his youth, spent many days working in the cotton fields.
Prior to being drafted, Jerry worked for Southern Pacific Railroad. He entered the United States Army on January 8, 1953, serving during the Korean War. He attained the rank of Private First Class and was honorably discharged on January 7, 1955. After returning home, Jerry began a 44-year career as a truck driver, earning the CB handle “City Bear.” During that time, he worked for Nikel & Son Grain Company and Mica Bros. Grain.
On January 4, 1958, Jerry married the love of his life, Andrea Martinez Alvarado, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Waelder, Texas. They shared a remarkable 68 years of marriage. Raised among many siblings, Jerry valued family deeply. Together, he and Andrea built a loving family that includes six children, eleven grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. Above all, Jerry considered his family his greatest blessing. His faith guided his life, and he prayed daily for his loved ones and others. He was known for his humility and for treating everyone with kindness and respect.
A devoted Catholic, Jerry was a faithful member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Flatonia. He was a third-degree member of the Knights of Columbus and a dedicated member of American Legion Post 94 for over 50 years. He actively participated in meetings, helped behind the bar, and served as Post Commander for several years. In retirement, he enjoyed spending time with his wife and friends at McDonald’s in Flatonia, where he could often be found sharing coffee and hamburgers.
Jerry was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Adam Alvarado; his grandson, John Kalina Jr.; two great-grandchildren, Louis Verastegui and Camilia Verastegui; three brothers, Eusebio Alvarado Sr., Domingo Alvarado, and Felipe Alvarado Sr.; and three sisters, Simona Alvarado, Arcadia Ribera, and Francisca Velasquez.
