Freddie Williams Obituary

Freddie Lee Williams was born on October 30, 1949, in Flatonia, Texas, to Sister Stella Mae and Brother Earnest Williams. The second of two children, he grew up alongside his older sister, Earline, in a home rooted in faith, love, and community. The Williams family were devoted members of St. Paul A.M.E. Church, where Freddie was baptized—a tradition continued by his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Freddie later served with pride as a Trustee of the church, dedicating countless hours to landscaping the church grounds and supporting fundraising efforts.

Freddie’s early education began at Douglas Elementary in Flatonia, continued at Randolph High School in La Grange, and culminated with his graduation from Flatonia High School in 1968. A gifted athlete, he participated in football, basketball, and track, always driven by a passion for sports and competition.

In 1973, Freddie married Jearnell Burton of Waelder, Texas. Together, they built a strong and loving home in Flatonia, raising three daughters and a granddaughter. For more than 51 years, Freddie and Jearnell nurtured a legacy of love, faith, and dedication. They were a fixture at athletic and academic events across Texas, always present to cheer on their girls. Under Freddie’s guidance and support, his daughters and granddaughter excelled both in the classroom and in sports, earning honors at the high school and collegiate levels.

Freddie lived by the scripture Philippians 4:13 — “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” That belief was evident in the way he worked tirelessly throughout his life to support his family and his community. His many jobs included lawn care, auto maintenance, utility services, and more. A true community mentor, “Mr. Freddie” often employed and guided local young men, instilling in them values of hard work, integrity, and respect.

A natural entrepreneur, Freddie ran his own side businesses and managed the Flatonia Trailer Park. His longest-held role was as Director of Maintenance and Transportation at Flatonia High School, where he served with dedication for decades before retiring in 2011.

In retirement, Freddie embraced life to the fullest.  His favorite quote was “Tomorrow isn’t promised, so live for Today.” He could often be found cheering on his grandchildren at sporting events, enjoying coffee or a cold drink with friends, tending to his yard, collecting everything from cars to coins, or diving into creative DIY projects. A master of the grill and a fierce domino player, he was known for throwing epic birthday celebrations that brought together friends, family, and neighbors for barbecue, games, and fellowship.

Freddie was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Stella Mae and Earnest Williams, and all his grandparents.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 51 years, Jearnell Williams; three daughters and their spouses: Laquita Marie Hopkins (Jeffery), Freda Lanell Evans (Richard), and Earlanda Lynn Williams-Collins (Rollin); five grandchildren: Brittany Christine Larew (Jack), Jarrett Keith Hopkins (Jessica), April Monique Dyles (Nathaniel), Jalen Jasper Hopkins (Asia), and Tristan Malik Collins; five great-grandchildren: Cameron Jay Hopkins, Brayden Amir Dyles, Declan Williams Larew, Delaney Rae Larew, and Jru Hopkins; his sister, Earline Williams; sisters-in-law: Ulean Henry, Covetter Burton, and Emma Sheree Burton; brothers-in-law: Austin (A.Q.) Burton (Linda), August Burton (Paula), and Malcolm Townsend (Bunny); as well as a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and treasured friends.

Freddie Lee Williams will be remembered for his unwavering faith, tireless work ethic, generous heart, and deep love for his family and community. His legacy lives on in all who had the privilege to know and love him.
