Donald (Don) was born to Weldon and Julia Calhoun on June 1, 1937, in Itasca, Texas. He was the third child born to this union. He came to know Jehovah God and is a baptized member of Jehovah's Witness Cinco Ranch Congregation, Katy, Texas. Donald attended regular services until his declining health limited his in-person attendance and he started worshipping virtually.
Donald graduated from Peabody High School, Hillsboro, Texas. He attended Prairie View A & M University and majored in Business Education. While attending Prairie View, he met the love of his life, Gladys Marie Glass. They were married on May 31, 1959. To this union one son was born, Donal Earl Calhoun Jr.
Donald was employed as a sales representative for Phillips Morris Inc. and worked in Houston. In 1968, he was promoted to Division Sales Manager and moved to New Jersey, where he and his family settled in East Orange, New Jersey where they resided for 43 years.
Later in life, he founded and operated his own business, East Orange Protective Systems, Inc. which installed burglar alarms and fire alarm systems all over the east coast and some of the west coast as well. He loved teaching his business to his son Donnie and also hired and trained local people in the community and became a role model for young people. Many times, he was invited to local schools on Career Day. Donald retired the family business in 2011 and moved with his family to Katy, Texas
Donald held memberships in several organizations: he was a life member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. and a member of the Business Bureau. He loved family events and special occasions. He was an avid of almost all sports events and one of his favorite times was watching sports with his son Donie.
He had a big personality and was known in New Jersey and New York as "Tex" with his cowboy boots, cowboy hat and full-length mink coat.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys Marie Glass Calhoun, his son. Donald "Donnie" Earl Calhoun, Jr., his grandparents, Mattie and Verge Calhoun, parents, Weldon and Julia Calhoun, brothers, Bobby Calhoun and sister, Doris Ann Calhoun Aleman.
Don is survived by his sister, Welda Calhoun Anderson, nieces, Verniece Davis, Teresa Jones, Shirley Calhoun Smith, Iona Calhoun Batiste, Ronin Bona, Julia Alaman, Shelia Alaman, Judy (Julia) Glass, Yvette Dix, Falon Carr, Virginia Berry and Carl Jean Vaughn. nephews, Weldon Calhoun, Winfield Anderson Je., Wilbur Glass, Jr., Jimmy Glass, Lee Vernon Glass Jr., Demetrius Glass and Tommy Glass, great nieces, Betty Calhoun Sherrod and Brenda (Sista Cal) Calhoun, and a host of cousins, other relatives and friends.
