Donald Calhoun, Jr. Obituary

Donald “Donnie” Earl Calhoun, Jr. was called by our Heavenly Father Jehovah God early on Saturday morning, September 30th.

Donnie, as he was lovingly called by family and friends, was born to Gladys Marie Glass Calhoun and Donald Earl Calhoun on June 28, 1961, in Houston, Texas. He was an only child.

Donnie knew our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and Jehovah God. He was baptized, at an early age, in the presence of his Aunt Welda, Grandmother Mama Julia and Cousin Andy Jr. at St. James Baptist Church in Odessa, Texas. After Don Sr. became a Jehovah Witness in 2013, Donnie attended meetings with his parents at the Jehovah Witness Kingdom Hall (Cinco Ranch Congregation). He became friends with many of the members in the congregation and attended meetings regularly until his health began to fail. Donnie regularly studied the Bible and Jehovah Witness Reading Materials.

Donnie attended elementary schools in Houston and East Orange, New Jersey. He graduated from Clifford J. Scott High School in East Orange and attended Prairie View A&M University. He received a certificate as an electronic technician.

Donnie was so proud to join his father in the family business, East Orange Protective Systems, Inc., which installed burglary and fire alarm systems. He enjoyed working with his Dad to install the systems, all over the east coast and some on the west coast, as well.

Donnie retired in 2011 from the family business, coincidentally, at the same time his Dad retired and moved with his family to Katy, Texas.

Donnie loved photography and although he was an amateur, he took his hobby seriously and on occasion had a dark room at home where he would develop his own film. He loved taking pictures at family gatherings and pestered everyone to “stop and smile, they were on camera”.

Donnie also loved all sports, and you could often find him with his dad watching football, basketball, baseball, tennis and just about any sport there was.

Donnie had a special relationship with his mother, Gladys, who he frequently confided in and would often seek her advice on various topics.

Donnie was a loyal friend to those who knew him as a friend and loved his large, extended family.

Donnie is survived by his parents, Gladys and Donald Calhoun, his Aunt Welda Calhoun Anderson, who he loved dearly, his “sister-cousins”—Judy Glass, Yvette Dix, Fallon Carr, Virginia Glass Berry, Brea Dix, Cynthia Glass Bivins, his “brother-cousins”—Wilbur Jr. Glass, Jimmy Glass, Raymond “Randy” Glass, Roderick “Rocky” Glass, Edward “Smokey” Glass, Larry Bryant, Bruce Dix, his little “niece-cousins “who he adored,—Peyton and Autumn Wood, as well as many other cousins, extended family and friends. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, L.V. and Esther Glass and Weldon and Julia Calhoun, as well as other Aunts, Uncles, and extended family.
