Celebrating the Life and Legacy
Harvey Steward was born April 17, 1925 to the late Lewis and Lela (Williams) Steward in Osage, Texas. He attended Pleasant Union School in Fayette County, Texas and graduated from Weimar Colored High School in Weimar, Texas. Drafted in 1943 into World War II into the US Navy he served at Corpus Christi Naval Air Station for four weeks and then on to the Philippines where he spent several years. He was discharged Honorably as Seaman 3rd Class. Upon his return to Weimar, Texas he worked for 40 years at M-G farms.
He was a faithful member of Mt. Arie Missionary Baptist Church, where his was a Deacon for over 60 years. On March 27, 1951 he was united in Holy Matrimony to the late Ruthie L. (McMillan) Steward.
Deacon Steward served the community as the first elected African-American to be elected to the Weimar City Council, where he served for 14 years. He was also a member of the Heritage Society Museum of Weimar and was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels where he made deliveries, and he is a Mason.
He departed this life on April 28, 2021 in Weimar, Texas under the care of Kindred Hospice Care, with his grandson John Harvey Steward as his care taker.
Deacon Steward leaves to cherish his memory; a daughter, Ruby Jean Knox and his son-in-law, Kenneth Knox of Houston, TX. Two grandsons, Rev. John Harvey Steward of Richmond, VA and Kenneth Knox, II of Houston, TX. Four granddaughters, Denise Knox of Houston, TX, Nyadia Thorpe (Minister Jeffrey) of Waxahachie, TX, Natalie Steward of Dallas, TX and Janine Steward of Brooklyn, NY. Six great grandsons, Frank, David, Dylan, Vincent, Caden and Caius. One great grand daughter, Kenisea and a host of loving relatives and friends.
