Mr. Charles Louis Martin, affectionately known as “Charlie Boy,” was born on May 31, 1956, in Plum, Texas, to the late Lee Andrew and Vancey McFarland Martin.
Charles accepted Christ at an early age and became a member of Gay Hill Baptist Church, where he faithfully served on the Deacon Board for many years. Later in life, he moved his membership to St. James African Methodist Episcopal Church, where he continued his service on the Trustee Board and was an enthusiastic member of the 4-Deep Bar-B-Q Team—a role he truly enjoyed.
A proud graduate of La Grange High School, Class of 1973, Charles loved tuning into KVLG-KBUK Radio to catch all the Leopard football games. He married Loretta Johnson, and to this union one daughter, LaCrease Martin, was born. Through this marriage, he also gained two stepsons, Raymond and Anthony Washington.
Charles was known for his big heart and willingness to help anyone in need. He often said, “I’ll try—bring it on,” even though he’d joke that he might “mess it up every time.” His humor and generosity endeared him to everyone who knew him.
He loved singing “The Old Ship of Zion,” his favorite hymn, and spending time with his buddies, lovingly known as The Rocky Creek Bunch.
Charles is preceded in death by his parents, Lee Andrew and Vancey Martin; two brothers, Robert McFarland and Thomas Martin; and two sisters, Claudia Ann Martin and Gladys Martin.
Charles leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Loretta Martin; his daughter, LaCresa Martin; and his granddaughter, Ja'Niah. He is also survived by his two stepsons, Raymond and Anthony Washington: his brother, Brian Martin; his special friend, Alfreda Ellison; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and close friends.
Charles will forever be remembered as a kind and gentle soul, always willing to lend a helping hand. Although he has departed this earthly world, he will live on in the hearts of those who were blessed to know him.
