LIFE AND LEGACY OF BETTY MARIE
Betty Marie Runnels was born on February 14, 1945, to Hallie Ballard and Elizabeth Runnels in Schulenburg, Texas. She departed this life on Saturday, November 12, 2022, in Austin, Texas. She confessed her life to Christ at an early age and became a devoted member of Pleasant Union Missionary Baptist Church. She served as the Announcing Clerk and a member of the choir.
Betty attended J.A. Green School in Schulenburg, Texas, and later received her GED.
Betty married Richard Powe Sr. on November 18, 1961, and eight children were born from this union. She later married James Jones on September 7, 1996. Betty was employed by Colonial Nursing Home as a Certified Nurse Aide for 34 years until her health began to fail.
Betty enjoyed spending time with her family, playing BINGO and cards, attending church services, watching sporting events, cooking for her family, sitting on her porch to visit with friends, and calling in birthday announcements to KVLG radio station.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Hallie Ballard and Elizabeth Runnels; daughters, Barbara & Annette Powe, and Reba Hawkins; step-daughter, Janice Thompson; brother, Isaac Runnels; sister, Florine Runnels; and husband, James Jones.
She leaves to cherish precious memories to her children, Stanley Powe of Houston, TX, Richard Powe Jr. of Schulenburg, TX, Cynthia Powe (Jeffery) of Schulenburg, TX, Craig Powe of Schulenburg, TX, and Yvonne Fontenette (John) of Pflugerville, TX; step-daughter, Christina Houston of Schulenburg, TX; 18 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; special friends and cousins: Rose Woods, Gloria Adams, Arlene Wilson, Albert Wright Sr., Laura Granger, Catherine Jackson, Lois Carroll, Dorothy Carr, and Marsha Caine; and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.
