On February 9, 1939, in La Grange, Texas Jessie East and Virgil Hamilton welcomed into the world their eldest baby girl, whom they named Betty Lee Hamilton. Betty attended public schools in La Grange, Texas, in her early years however Jessie would relocate to Houston, Texas with her husband, Otis Minton and her two daughters, Betty and Shirley. Otis accepted Betty and Shirley as his own and became the father-figure in their lives and raised them as his girls. Betty accepted Christ at an early age, and she became a member of Wesley Chapel AME Baptist Church in the greater Third Ward Community of Houston, Texas under the leadership of the late Rev. Dr. E. E. Coates.
Betty was a strikingly gorgeous woman and one God allowed her to meet a handsome man named Leeland Jackson, whom she married and to that union they welcomed into the world five beautiful children, Carolyn, DeWayne, Latasha, Stoney and Sharon. Betty truly adored her children and would be known to her family as "Madea". As the Matriarch of our family, she was the driving force that kept us together. We all shared so many great memories with her that we will forever cherish in our hearts until we meet her again.
Betty was a hardworking skilled woman. In her early years she worked as a designer in manufacturer of aluminum windows and kitchen cabinets and interior designing of wall components at George C. Vaughan & Sons, Inc. which was one of the first in Texas to manufacture wood trusses and wall components. Betty maintained her position within the company until it was dissolved in the late 1980's. She then went on to be a devoted caregiver in the home health care industry for many years until she retired to care for her late mother, Jessie in 2001. After the passing of her mother, she continued to care for ill family members until her own health began to decline. Betty truly loved her family, so much that she made many sacrifices to be there for those who needed her.
Betty lived a wonderful life. She enjoyed so many things, and we can all agree shopping was one of them. Known as a fashionista in her day, she had an amazing wardrobe. She and her sister Shirley would always spend weekends shopping and running errands. Their bond was truly cherished between them, and Shirley adored her big sister. Betty also enjoyed playing bingo and spending time with family and loved ones for the holidays. She was the true definition of a mother and grandmother, because she was always there for each of us. The memories we have with our "Madea" will live on through each of us until we are reunited in heaven with our Angel again.
As God saw fit on May 25, 2022, Betty was called into Eternal Rest within his kingdom. She transitioned into Heaven to be reunited with all our loved ones. She is preceded in death by her mother, Jessie Minton, father(s), Virgil Hamilton and Otis Minton. Husband, Leeland Jackson. Three children, Carolyn Braimah, Dewayne Jackson and Stoney Jackson and 1 grandson, James Hughes.
She leaves to cherish her memories, her two devoted daughters, Latasha Harris and Sharon Jackson. Her loving sister, Shirley Townsend and 1 nephew, Larry Williams. Two half-sisters, Angelina & Theresa and stepmother, Ruth Hamilton all of Los Angeles, CA. One remaining aunt, Margaret Adams of Schulenburg, Texas. Five grandchildren, Morris Jackson (Shonci Jackson). Michelle Hughes, Ashley Jackson, Erikka Jackson and Jonathan Harris. Four great grandchildren whom she absolutely adored, Jaylon Thomas, Terrell Jackson (Germany), Jannell and Kaiairra Hughes. Betty was also a great-great grandmother to four precious little angels which she loved dearly. She also leaves behind a host of other extremely close relatives, family and friends that will truly miss her presence here on earth.
